Use And Care Of Rapid Palatal Expander

BLOG-palatal-expander

With any orthodontic treatment, it’s essential to take care of the appliances that you are wearing and using. It’s important to keep your appliances clean in order to maintain an optimal level of oral health. Proper care for a non-removable oral appliance, such as a palatal expander, can take some extra time. But don’t worry! Stormberg Orthodontics has some tips and tricks to help anyone who is wearing rapid palatal expanders. Since many patients who receive a palatal expander are very young, it’s important for parents to be aware of these care needs. Our office has experience working with palatal expanders, and our staff has first-hand experience that can help parents deal with their children wearing them.

Tips on How to Use & Care for a Rapid Palatal Expander

Here are some daily tips you can use to help your child during treatment:

  • Activate the Expander Daily- First, start by inserting the key into the hole in the middle of the appliance. Gently push the key toward the back of your mouth and push it as far back as possible. Then, remove the key towards the back of the throat without trying to not pull forward, which would reverse the previous turn. After several turns, you may notice a space between your front teeth, which is a good sign! This is only temporary and will be closed.
  • Use the Right Tools- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and minimally abrasive toothpaste to clean your expander. You may also want to invest in a WaterPik to help you reach tough corners and angles.
  • Clean Thoroughly- Brush your appliance while brushing your teeth to keep the expander clean. Brush for about 2 minutes. Also, don’t forget to floss as well. Rinse with water and mouthwash to loosen food particles and plaque that are stuck in between your teeth and near the expander. We have supplied the patient with an end-tuft toothbrush to enable good brushing in and around the expander.
  • Stay in Touch With Your Orthodontist- If you experience discomfort that does not go away, please contact your orthodontist. Make sure to go to your check-up appointments so your treatment can progress.
